Dancestars Show
Monday Afternoon Dancestars Show
The Dancestars Show, Assembly Rooms, Monday 3rd May 2010, 2pm and 5pm shows
For those who have not tried visiting the annual Dancestars Show, then you are in for a treat. Set in the unique atmosphere of the stunning Georgian Period Ballroom in the Assembly Rooms, Bath, this is a dance show like no other and extremely atmospheric.
Please note that due to a change in the running for this show there is no interval as advertised in early media. This is owing to the late inclusion of five-time World Cali salsa champions Swing Latino's couple in a rare UK appearance. Come and see some of these acclaimed dancers up close and live in the stunning setting of the Assembly Rooms ballroom.
Just sit back, relax and let this unique cocktail of some of dances finest entertain your Bank Holiday afternoon and evening away.
You will be treated to high quality exhibitions from many genres of dance which includes the following artists:
Aidan Davis (Britains Got Talent):
Self-taught 13 year-old Aidan Davis took the world by storm in the 2009 series of Britain’s Got Talent where, in spite of never having had a dance lesson, he made it all the way to that prestigious final.
Simon Cowell said, “I think you’re better than any dancer on this show, you are super super, super talented” and the audiences agreed.
His dance has since taken him all over the UK and beyond, appearing in the Michael Jackson tribute show and more recently on a UK tour with Diversity.
“I practice around the house – outside, and in my room. When I’ve perfected a move I’ll go downstairs and show my mum. Really, I just love dancing. It means everything to me! I don’t learn routines. I make my own moves up, and then I might look on the internet and see another person doing it, but alter it my own way.”
In the Dancestars Show, Aidan shows us three dances and all the reasons why his street popping and locking style captured the attention of those three demanding judges and the rest of the UK. Feel inspired and proud as one young boy’s hard work and dedication have made his dreams come true.
Swing Latino:
Surely this has to be one of the worlds most enigmatic and energetic dance couples? Nilson Castro & Daisy Roldan from Cali, Colombia are part of the five time world championship salsa team Swing Latino. The couple are highly regarded for their achievements in dance not just with Swing Latino, but in their own right as a popular, charismatic pairing at the individual Cabaret competition being placed as high as second in the world for their breathtaking performances.
Nilson and Daisy dance Cali or Colombian style cabaret salsa. Cali salsa is in itself a highly energetic and amazingly visual style of dance.
You will never see feet, legs and everything else move with the speed that Nilson and Daisy can perform. During the show they will give us two breathtaking choreographies. It will be the first time they’ve performed in a Georgian period ballroom too!
Swing Latino’s appearance is kindly being supported by UK Colombian Holiday Company, Salsa In Colombia whom we would like to thank for working with us to bring Nilson & Daisy here.
f.a.b. - The Detonators:
This is a company that will probably rewrite the definitiion of dynamic duo, for Tiago Gambogi and Margaret Swallow (aka f.a.b. - The Detonators) manage to create a type of physical dance theatre you just cannot take your eyes away from. Since their return to the UK in 2001 they have established themselves as a dynamic, mature company producing work of vision and humour.
Offering an engaging and dynamic blend of dance, theatre, design and music with a liberal helping of humour, the company is leaving an ever growing trail of thrilled and delighted audiences in their wake.
Tango In Action:
Diomar Giraldo Escobar and Alexandra Wood have studied with the greatest tango maestros in Buenos Aires and have performed extensively throughout Europe and Latin America.
Giraldo has appeared on our screens several times including in Madonna’s Evita, the Channel Four film, Dance, and on BBCs Strictly Come Dancing.
Alexandra’s early formal dance career deviated after discovering her passion for the Tango. She trained relentlessly, mainly in Buenos Aires and was quickly offered tango teaching and performing work. In 2002, with dancer Stefano Fava, she created “Tango In Action”, the first Tango Dance school in London. Alexandra has toured extensively, performing and teaching in festivals worldwide alongside some of the world’s leading tango dancers and musicians, including Miguel Angel Zotto (Tango Por Dos), orchestras Color Tango (BsAs.) and Hyperion (Italy). She regularly performs in the most prestigious milongas in Buenos Aires.
From classic tangos, milongas and valses to contemporary tango pieces, Giraldo and Alexandra combine elegance with virtuosic athleticism to create a truly breathtaking performance.
Bongo Bolero:
Bongo Bolero are Nikki Andrews and Richard Durnford. In addition to extensive training in circus acrobatics, gymnastics and Ashtanga Yoga, Nikki and Richard have trained at several of the leading schools including the French National Circus School, The San Fransisco School of Circus Arts, and The Circus Space in London. They have since developed an original and contemporary style of performance that mixes circus, comedy, theatre and movement which they use to thrill and entertain audiences of all types the world over.
Normally we would write more about what Bongo Bolero will perform here but we actually don’t want to spoil their surprise. Other than to say with painstaking attention to detail, there follows a mesmerising fusion of strength, grace and perfect fluidity of movement underscored with an emotion seemingly trapped within the representation of their act.
Hoppin' Mad:
Bath based swing-jive-Lindyhoppers Graeme Puckett and Ann Peskett appeared at the very first Bath International Dance Festival and we are delighted they could appear at the festival once again.
As well as working with a list of TV companies as long as your arm, who else could lie claim to choreographing for Chicken Run? Well that’s exactly what might happen if you are acknowledged experts in your genre as these two are.
Their classes have always proved popular and now you get the chance to see them perform in this wonderful setting.
Fun Mandarin Chinese Dancers:
Supporting our professional artists, these wonderful dancers are a Bath-based group of girls aged 8-15 years old. One member of the group goes to China every summer and learns new dances which she teaches to her friends. The girls will perform 3 dances from their repertiore.
