Update: World Record information
The meeting place for the amazing "Singin' in the Rain" is at Bath Pavilion, near the leisure centre, from 11.15am on Sunday. There you can leave belongings safely and there will be a final teaching and practice session before everyone walks across the Rec into the performance space around Laura Place before 12noon. Roads will be closed for the event. It is getting extremely exciting with the numbers registered. Wrap up in case of rain (which in some ways might be great!) and don't forget that brolly! This event will certainly be going ahead regardless of the rain, in fact in some ways rain is what this one is all about so come along and have some fun.
On Sunday 2nd May, following in the footsteps of the incredible World Record Waltz in 2009, Bath International Dance Festival are inviting you all to help set a new World Record for the largest ever umbrella dance, "Singin' In The Rain". At 12noon, the world famous Laura Place, Great Pulteney Street, Bath, will be transformed into a performance for the World Record Umbrella Dance performed to "Singin' in the Rain".
The World Record is open to anyone aged 5 years and older willing to have some fun. For children up to 18yrs there must be an appointed adult, named on the entry form, responsible for entering a child or children in advance of the event, and who will attend taking responsibility for the child or children at the event - this might for instance be a parent, guardian, teacher or dance teacher known to the children or child. Bath International Dance Festival do not need details of the children involved in the event, but do need accurate pre-registered numbers.
Everyone will be required to dance the full routine as shown in the video below, having learnt the sequence yourselves, or having been taught the steps by a teacher. An official Guinness World Records adjudicator will be present with a team of observers checking everyone dances the steps correctly for the full five-minute requirement, including an umbrella, to the specially adapted version of "Singin' in the Rain".
Here is a short presentation of the complete performance to give you an idea of the entire piece. The dance comprises a short introduction, a main section to be danced 8 times, and an ending. The steps are broken down and explained slowly in the second video:
Here, in the second video, you can see the steps broken down for teaching purposes:
We urge everyone to register and help us to break this fantastic record in Laura Place on Sunday morning 2nd May. If you dance, or if you're a complete non-dancer, learn the easy steps, register and come along. We will send you additional information after you register so be sure to include a valid e-mail address.
The minimum requirement for the world record umbrella dance is 200 participants. We are not just aiming to break this record, but to make it difficult for others to beat. Come along with your number, and get those steps going.
Please note you must register prior to the day and registration on the day will not be possible.
Terms & Conditions
You will not be permitted to enter the area without your registration number so please do not forget it.
Please come your number, having learnt the steps for this special event beforehand.
You will be required to dance the steps for the entire track, just over 5 minutes in length, up to four times during the world record attempt.
Children aged 5-18years are encouraged to enter but must have been registered and will be accompanied by a supervising, responsible adult during the event. This event is a professionally managed event.
No glass items, alcohol or smoking will be permitted inside the event area.
Laura Place is a hard standing road area and we ask you to wear appropriate outdoor shoes also suitable in the event of a wet Singin In The Rain (what a sight that would be)!
The record attempt will proceed regardless of the weather so please bring appropriate outdoor clothing. Everyone must hold their umbrella throughout the dance which must have PLASTIC or VERY BLUNT tips to the spokes due to the moving nature of this event. Umbrellas with standard sharp spokes will not be permitted.
You agree that your name, photograph and/or video may be used in after-event publicity by Bath International Dance Festival, Viva La Dance Ltd and Guinness World Records, which may include filming of the event for television or on-line broadcast. No other information regarding your registration will be given to any other party without your expressed permission in advance. You can view a copy of our Privacy Policy at the foot of this page.
Please send your full name, agegroup and postcode to us using the following form. Every participant is required to complete this form although children under 18 should ask a parent, supervisor or guardian to complete on their behalf, the adult entering their own information for name instead of the child's name:
The audio track is available for download in mp3 format here but is not to be used for any other activity than the World Record Umbrella Dance event which will correctly pay rights for the use of the music.
